Useful Baskets

These classes will enable the beginner or experienced student to weave a variety of useful baskets...baskets that are created to be used for daily activities. The emphasis is on empowering the student to become confident in creating their own baskets by focusing on useful designs, material selection, sizing and shaping of baskets, patterns and tool usage.

Adirondack Packbasket

Carried by Adirondack trappers and guides this sturdy woven backpack has a simple pot-bellied shape. All sizes are woven from heavy duty reed. The handle and rim are hand carved with a drawknife on a shave horse. The skids are made from hardwood harvested and milled on our own sawmill. The Osgood pack has heavy duty green cotton straps, the Jenkins and Cori's packbaskets have a selection of colored straps.

Burma Ball
The predecessor of the Hacky Sack, Sepak Raga or woven ball is an ancient South East Asian Ball that requires the players to keep the ball in the air without use of hands or arms. The design is a complex pentagon... made from six strands of round reed. It is initially confusing, but once the pattern is learned it is very addictive. You will then be able to adapt it to various size strands to create minature or oversized Burma balls for gifts or decorations.
